I am trying to order the brushless hedge trimmer and Home Depot shows that it is unavailable.

It looks like the kit with charger and battery is available, but the bare tool isn't. Interesting. You might try using the store locator feature and select the dealer box and see if there are other EGO dealers in your zip code area. (Link is called "Find a Store" at the bottom of this page.)
I wonder if the bare tool just isn't available yet?

Tried that, HD says it doesn't show available at any of their stores. Have a call into Ego support but they have not called back yet.

Right, that's why I suggested to select the dealer box. It will filter out HD stores and show other authorized dealers in your area.

For what it's worth the kit is on sale right now for $150. Seems like the battery and charger make this a better buy right now than the tool only buy. I bought one yesterday....my third one. Maybe the best tool that Ego offers...followed by the 16" chainsaw.

It looks to be available at rcpw if that helps.

I just spoke to Ego customer care and they do not have a timeline of when the product will be available at Home Depot. She did point out that it is a pretty good value to get the 2.5 battery and charger for $50 compared to buying those pieces separately. So, while I did not think I needed an extra battery and charger I went ahead and ordered the one in stock from HD today.

It is a pretty good deal.  Always nice to have an extra battery.  And, if you prefer to recoup some of your cash you could always sell the battery and charger using ebay etc.

I did the same. I just use the lighter battery on my  smaller equipment.
