The good news is it has a 5 year warranty so give Customer Service a call and they'll take care of you. Best to call early in the day to avoid hold times.
They can be reached at 1-855-EGO-5656 (1-855-346-5656) from 8:30AM - 8:00PM EST (Monday - Friday) & 10:00AM - 6:00PM EST (Saturday & Sunday).

I had the same issue begin about a month ago.  The only way I could regain control of the self-propelled speed was, after the handle was fully extended and locked into position, to wiggle the cable harness bale upper section around in multiple directions and multiple times, then eventually I would regain control.  I speculate the repeated closing and extending of the upper handle assembly is causing either a break down of a wire in that bale  or at the termination at either the upper assembly or the middle assembly. Will be taking mine to HD for repair later this week or next
