Just bought my first ego mower a few weeks ago and have been impressed with everything other than the self propel feature. When I pull the handle there is a very noticeable delay before it kicks in and when I let go it locks up the rear tires for a few seconds making turning difficult. It also occasionally just completely fails to engage when I pull the lever. Is this all normal or is my mower defective?

Missed engagement can't be normal. If someone says so, that's a lie. I cannot speak for the dwell on engagement, but motors may accelerate at a ramp up rate so it is smooth and won't spin the tires. I don't know if this is what you are talking about.

I'd say you got a bum unit. Call ego about it. If they say take it to home Depot for repair, and you can return it. Return or exchange it, don't be waiting for 6 weeks for repairs on a brand new mower.
