Ok, as I was rolling my 4 wheel gas edger to the recycling dumpster, it had me thinking about a new edger design. I've never liked the deadly spinning blade and belt design.
I use an oscillating Multi-tool for many different projects and it is my favorite tool in my arsenal. I use the following because it requires no tools to change the blade, simply flip the handle up and spin, put on new blade and clamp back down: Rockwell RK5140K Sonicrafter Hyperlock with Universal Fit and Constant Speed Control Oscillating Tool Kit.
Now, since this tool cuts through absolutely everything I throw at it, why not dirt and grass? Yep, worked quite well. Though I'm only testing with a 2 1/2" course wood blade.
Why not design an electric 4 wheel edger using the same technology. Use a large half moon shaped well designed blade to cut the grass along with the dirt. My experience tells me that this is not only possible, but would revolutionize the home edger. No more spinning blades to replace, no more worn out belts. Very simple bolt/clamping system to change the blade, no tools required. It would literally melt through whatever you want to edge.
To the EGO Design team. Think about this a bit, it just may be one of the more simple things you've had to design and build (If it works as I think it would). It would also provide excellent reliability! No spinning parts. Direct Drive and Powerful.
Just a thought.
