That old school method probably works, but if you happen to have a saw where the chain speed is lower you may not get oil flinging off the end even at its high-speed. I have not tried this with my ego saw so I can’t comment whether or not it works.

If the chain has visual amounts of oil on it, or enough oil that your fingers get oily touching the side of the chain it’s probably getting adequate lubrication. Another thing to watch for while cutting, be sure that the chain is not burning the wood. Burn marks in the wood can be an indication of poor chain lubrication, but can also mean your chain is dull.
