Noise from self-propel system

Just bought 2102SP and have used it once. The running blade sounds like a fan, as expected. However the self-propulsion system when engaged makes a somewhat raspy, high-pitched whining sound, kind of unpleasant and not what I was expecting. Others experience this? Is it normal or indication of a problem?

Difficult to help here without hearing the noise. Electric motors tend to have a high pitched whining sound. Raspy? Dunno. If it's louder than the cutting blade motor, there's probably a problem.

Check out a few YouTube reviews and compare the sound. I remember thinking the SP drive was a little loud, but I haven't heard it in person.

Well, descriptions are often subjective. But I think what I hear on my self-propelled mower could be described as you describe yours.

I've seen other people, more or less have a similar thought as to the sound of the motor. So I don't think there is much to worry about. Continue to check out the forums and see what other people think.

Remember the Main blade motor is just spinning a blade kind of like a fan. But the motor that's used to propel the motor forward has some gearing involved, so that might B part of the reason it sounds different. I have a feeling that the propelling motor is also not brushless so there could be the added sounds from brushes. Also, think about how an old drill used to sound? They are a little bit loud and raspy... Kind of what you're talking about. But that didn't cause any reliability issues with them either.

I didn't like it at first, but it doesn't bother me anymore. Of course when you're actually mowing you probably won't hear it very much.

I've got the SP mower, as well.  Blade motor is fan-quiet; very much agree.  The SP motor does emit a rather high pitched "whirrrrrrr" when in use.  The first time I used it, I could hear it quite well and it bothered me a bit - but that's just because I was so used to the fan-quiet blade in the old 20" and the 21" when not using the SP mode.  But.... I honestly don't hear it anymore, not enough to bother me anyway.  The thing trucks along like a marathon runner, and the trigger for engaging it works very comfortably.

I'm pretty happy with my 21" SP mower, raspy whirrrrrring wheels and all!
