Very nice.  Good way to balance the weight.  This would be good for a commercial type of setup.

I can't tell how the backpack connects to the blower, but it says airflow is inline. So is the backpack just a battery holder with electrical connection that could possibly be connected to other future Ego products?

And can the backpack separate from the blower if you just want to carry a spare battery on your back while using other tools like a lawnmower or chainsaw?

Blue Angel, I don't think the motor is in the backpack like it would be in a gas backpack blower.

From the ProTools review :

"EGO is getting greater performance in part by eliminating the air resistance found in a curved tube design. At first glance, the inline design begs the question as to why they even bothered to make it a backpack in the first place. After all, it almost seems like it’s just a more powerful version of the last hand held blower."

"The backpack frame holds the EGO battery of your choice (a 5.0 amp hour battery will ship with it). A flexible tube runs to the blower motor housing and it utilizes top-oriented joystick controls to complete the traditional backpack blower feel."

So the question remains, what runs through the tube connecting the backpack to the blower motor? And is it detachable on either end?

You may be right, David. When I re-read it it sort of sounds that way.

I was basing my thoughts on this image:

But looking closer, the grate opening and flex tube appear to be much larger in diameter than the body where the handle is. Knowing how these turbine fan blowers don't like restriction after the fan, it would make sense that the fan was below the handle and a larger low restriction tube would feed it.

I guess having the blower tube attached to the backpack is what would make this a single handed tool. If it was separated with just an electric cord connection, you would need two hands to operate it.

Also since the thrust load is quite high on these blowers, this design would let them counter it with the straps, directing the forces to the users body and relieving the right arm.

Good point about the backpack helping in controlling the force from the air flow. A modular design seems like it would be really cool, but probably would just make for a mediocre blower (and whatever else connected to it).

I'll keep holding my breath for the completely unrelated backpack shop vac announcement that Jennifer will hopefully be making any day now!

This looks really good! I wouldn't have a use for such a capable machine, not yet anyway, but a friend of mine who just bought a big lot surely could!

Way to go Ego! Looks like you have both the most powerful handheld AND backpack blower options in the cordless Li-Ion market! :-)

If you make that with two identical tubes, either ambidextrous or double-barrel, it would double the power.  The pros might like that.

The backpack blower would be nice and all but there are already two blowers in the lineup. What's with all the duplication when the line of tools is not complete? Is there any bladed edger info?

Thanks

Hi William, this backpack blower should be available by the end of August.  It will be very limited availability in stores but will be easily available online on homedepot.com.  This will come with a 5.0Ah battery.

Woohoo!

Come to papa!

$299 for the blower and a 5.0Ah battery. 5.0Ah alone is $226. ~$74 more you get the backpack with blower.

I'll most likely still be using my 7.5Ah battery solely (as I've gotten mowing down to about 35-40 minutes and with very few times I use SP), so should have more than enough time to cleanup the yard after mowing.

Now, about that edger.....

You may be surprised how quickly the blower can drain a battery. I believe it's the highest drain EGO tool.  BUT, you can't get performance without drain!  You can have canned air, or a real blower.  This is a real blower.

I would like to see this bundled with a 7.5Ah battery, but 5.0Ah is a good balance.

Before I go ahead and pull trigger on this purchase is there anyway they might rethink and change the battery to 7.5 instead of the 5? I don't need the blower as of today but will need in next few weeks.

Doubt it. I'm imagining they've already got packaging planned and have started boxing units (if they're not already awaiting them to arrive via shipping container).

Would the 7.5 battery work in the blower? I really think that power would be ideal for he backpack - can the 7.5 be used in the snow blower?

I was thinking about going for the 5.0 with a quick charger - that would be back up for the backpack and then have two batteries as back up for the snow blower.

Getting one 7.5 may not do any good really

Batteries are interchangeable across all products, just comes down to run time.

With that said, I bought the sp with a 7.5Ah battery, and just got the blower. Plan is to mow and blow as much as I can out of the 7.5, then have 5.0 as backup.

  • 179,708 Points 100k badge 2x thumb
William, the 7.5 will work with the snow blower.

Having four 5Ah batteries and two rapid chargers would make for one formidable snow blower setup! By the time you exhaust a pair of batteries and do a little shoveling, the next pair would be done charging and ready to go!

Home Depot's spec chart says that the blower does 210mph. Is that just an error or does that mean it has a flat nozzle? I'm guessing that they put that there confusing it with the charger power.

Jennifer,

In the manual it shows the boost speed at 120mph.  Can you get clarification what the Max Air Velocity above it means?

The 120MPH is a misprint.  145MPH is correct.  Thanks for alerting us to the typo.  We're making a change to our manual.

  • Variable speed: 320 CFM to 600 CFM
  • Maximum air velocity: 145 MPH
  • Up to 120-minute run-time with 5.0AH 56-volt Arc-LithiumTMBattery (on low speed)
  • Turbine fan engineering
  • Hi-efficiency brushless motor
  • Weather-resistant construction
  • Adjustable tube length
  • 8 times quieter than gas-powered backpack blowers
  • Adjustable harness with waist belt
  • 5 Year Warranty
The 145 MPH is best case scenario. It's actually a bit lower than that.

Also, the manual says the speed in boost mode is 120 mph, but maximum speed is 145 mph. Can you explain what this means? Lastly, what are run times with 7.5 battery in high and turbo modes?

Eric,

This is an error in the manual that is being fixed.  The boos speed is 145.  Jennifer from EGO has confirmed the error has been addressed.  You are just seeing it in printed materials.

Eric, the 7.5 will give about 50% more run time compared to the 5. So 22 min would extend to 33 min etc.
