Mower Whirling-Whistling Sound When In Self-Propelled Mode

I have the newest 21" self-propelled Ego mower--the LM2102SP. I mowed a small stretch of grass yesterday to test it out and it worked and sounded fine. However, when I went to finish my yard today, I noticed that whenever I push the self-propel lever to put the mower in that mode, the mower would make a fairly loud whirling sound--the faster the speed setting the louder the whirling or whistling sound. Is this normal? I did not notice it yesterday.

Shouldn't be "loud"; the SP gear is probably defective. Get it exchanged at Home Depot.

Loud is a relative term. The SP certainly makes an audible sound that can be heard above the very quiet mower motor.

I should have said whirring I think, not whirling.  Anyway, wish I could upload a video here so others could hear the sound.

The self propel feature makes a higher pitched sound than the normal blade mower motor, but it shouldn't be much louder than the blade mower motor.

Here is a short video I made to demonstrate the whirring when in self-propelled mode:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqa4Qp-csMk&feature=youtu.be

That sounds a lot like other videos I've watched. I don't have SP so don't have first hand experience with the sound, but that doesn't sound any different than the ones I have seen in videos.

It sounds pretty much like mine and suppose it may
sound loud because it's not drowned out by the blade motor like a gas mower would. But, if you're concerned still, call customer service and let them make a judgement on the sound. 1-855-EGO-5656 (1-855-346-5656). Call early during the workday to avoid long waits.

Yah, that sounds about right (your blade motor seems to be quieter than mine, but your self propel unit is about the same noise as mine.)

Sounds just like mine which has been operating perfectly for 3 years.  I think you are all good.  Just a change form what you are used to with gas mowers.

To echo everyone else, that's exactly how mine sounds.

Thanks for the responses.  It seemed quieter the first day I used it, but maybe I just was not thinking about the sound as much because I was focused on learning how to use the mower.

The hight pitched sound at high speed seems normal, but if it gets to be more of a growling/grinding noise, then the gear box has gone bad and needs replaced.  Is covered under warranty.
