Mower blade cutting width

Has anyone used a longer blade than the one provided by ego? The blade measures 20-1/4" on my new 21" SP mower and I get strips of uncut grass covered by clippings when mulching. The inside housing measurement looks like 20-3/4 blade would work better.

I'm wondering since there can be a fair amount of grass sticking to the underside of the mower that EGO didn't want the blade getting bogged down too soon by the grass buildup during mowing so they made it the length it is with that in mind. Keep the underside pretty free of buildup and your mulching should go better. Of course it depends on the type of grass you have. Also, how  much you are cutting off each time. I'm finding no more than an inch at a time works very well for my grass.

The underside does stay pretty clean and brush it out after every use. I cut often so it won't be too much to cut. The strip of grass left with clippings in the wheel track can be cleaned up by overlapping on the next adjacent cut. However this reduces the cutting width to even less than the 20-1/4" blade length. Getting the cutting width closer to the advertised 21" can be done with a longer blade. Hopefully someone has successfully done so.

John, I have used a 21" Ego High Lift blade on my 20" mower, cut shorter to fit.  Two things:

1. The deck on my mower isn't round, there are areas wider than others.  If you do go this route, be very careful to make sure your longer blade won't hit the deck.

2. Using a non-Ego blade will void your warranty.  Getting a universal blade to fit will require modifications to the blade, which are hard to do (very tough metal to cut/drill) as well as being potentially unsafe.  You are on your own! :-)

Please tell more about your experience using the longer blade

Blue, thanks for the info. Sounds like you have used a longer blade than what ego supplies with the mower. Please tell if you found improvement in the cut. More specifically did it stop leaving a row of cut grass in the wheel track, thereby reducing or eliminating the requirement to overlap.

Blue is right on both counts. I can’t recall anyone discussing another blade that worked successfully.

John, Have you found a solution? I have the exact same problem as you. Ego sells a 21 inch blade I was considering trying that.
