As much as I despise social media and the "selfie" generation, I really enjoy some places on the web like hardocp.com forums and this one.  So I took a "selfie".  Now can I just die.

Time to get to know each other.  a bit.  I'm in the commercial truck tire industry.  It's interesting.  I use to be in IT as a Network Engineer, but burnout of everything technical hit me like a brick.  I claim to people that have problems with a computer, that I can't even turn on a PC.  Problem solved.  Married 25 years to life, 2 daughters, and generally a laid back old fart.  I don't want to put much personal stuff on the web, because it all becomes permanently stored in Google's server bunkers.  (I see UFO's too). :).

Anyways, here is me at "work".  Notice that left monitor, it's monitoring  :). I take no responsibility for problems occurred when viewing the picture below, like cracking screens or sudden urges to scream at your monitor.

Let's hear your short story!  This is our EGO Facebook.  God I hate Facebook.  Let me retract that.  lol.

Thanks for sharing that.  You made me think of my mother.  Time to give her a call.

OK, just remember... you started it! :-)

So a little about me. I'm not quite an old fart yet, but I'm working on it. Just turned 40 and have noticed a worsening condition of needing to care for my lawn. I'm pretty sure age has something to do with that.

I spent several years after College between Ontario and Michigan working in manufacturing and Automotive as a CAD designer/project manager/production "Engineer" (Engineer is in quotes, it was a job title only, I'm not an Engineer). What an eye opener. Before that I wondered how a car company could justify the price of a car, now I wonder how on earth they're able to turn a profit. Seriously. I'm glad I did it as the experience is invaluable, but I'm also glad I did it when I was young... I don't know how well I'd cope now with those constant deadlines and long work days.

Automotive dried up in 2007/8. Without a job but with a girlfriend in Ottawa, I moved there and found a temp job with Transport Canada, then got a permanent job with a specialty Engineering support group at DND (Department of National Defense), which is the civilian arm of the Canadian Forces. I do all kinds of cool stuff here that I'd really love to share, but I'd like to keep my job. :-)

Common-law married, two stepsons from her previous marriage which suits me just fine as they are pretty much grown up and I was never really that interested in having kids of my own.

I have always enjoyed taking part in forums. I am a moderator on a large car forum (which I have been spending less time at lately), and am active here as well. I am a 100% certified geek in every sense of the word... if it's technical I'm curious about it. I find one of the coolest things about the internet is it teaches you how little you actually know. There is SO MUCH STUFF in this world to learn about! I'm not much for discussions about politics or religion, give me a good article from Popular Science and a nice craft beer or some maple whisky on the rocks (yeah baby!) and I'm good to go.

I'm into cars, audio/music, tools, cars, batteries, emerging tech, hard rock, and cars. As I type this I'm listening to Lowlife by Theory of a Deadman. Not an aspirational tune, for sure, but pretty darn good none the less!

Gotta keep things general so, like SCDC, Google doesn't end up with enough personal information to clone me.

And the requisite selfie. Our camera policies at work forbid any photography so I can't show you anything there, but how about this incredible shot of me and about 40% of my postage stamp lawn?

Like the look. You look like a cool guy to be around. Great life story. Funny you said that about cars. I refuse to indulge my deep desire for a new car because they seem way too expensive. With age and life experiences come frugality.

I do love tech, but on my own terms. I'm big into graphic animation and some gaming. So I always have the latest processor and graphic technology at home.

I feel kinda bad about bashing your headlamp. I have some amazing ones myself. My wife says my biggest weakness is flashlights. I have a funny feeling a lot of men have that issue.

Anyway, it is really nice to put a face to the text. You are a very interesting person and I thoroughly enjoy your posts. And your tiny yard.

Funny stuff:

1 - My current car is the first one I ever bought new, and I'm having buyers remorse after realizing if I'd waited a couple years I could have bought it for half price, just like all of my previous cars. Darn 0% financing and the timing of my last car getting old did it to me.

2 - I built my own computer 4 years ago, and promptly forgot most of what I read while building it. Got caught up in numbers and built quite a powerhouse that gets used for... Web Surfing 99% of the time.

3 - Bashing? Dude, it's all in fun! :-)

4 - Lights. Mmmmmm, lights. I have a collection of 4Sevens lights I acquired as I went through a phase. Very nice stuff, like jewelry to a guy who appreciates machining! Got a nice Black Diamond headlight two years ago, and it makes yard chores at night a pleasure. Neighbors probably wonder though...

Agreed. I never met a guy who didn't like a nice flashlight, just those who don't want to pay for one. :-)

5 - Yes, my tiny yard! I'm very happy with the way it's coming along since actually caring about it since fall last year. Amazing what some fertilizer and grass seed can do after a couple seasons!

Always good to put a face to the words. And I must point out... Three monitors? I wish I could even get a second monitor at work! The gubberment has a standard cubicle configuration for us that includes a single 20" monitor. For lab work I'm ordering a $10k laptop workstation, but my desktop can't have a second monitor!

Maybe things will change s little when I'm the boss someday. :-)

let's see.  #1.  I have a 2001 buick park avenue that looks and runs like new.  It's getting driven until the apocalypse.  my 06 Pontiac Vibe, wow what a maintenance free machine.  Great wife car.  I drive a crap Kia that hasn't been so much crap.  06 and hasn't had one thing go wrong.  I did the 100k service in my driveway over the winter.  If they keep cramping things under a hood, it will be impossible to remove drive belts.

#2 Just upgraded last weekend again. 6700k, gtx 1080 x2, 64 Gigs RAM.  It takes that to do rendering.  10k laptop?  Does that go with your 25k toilet seat.  Government.  Hrmph.  lol.

#5. you have a beautiful lawn Blue.  Centipede normally grows a lighter shade of green and fertilizer is a bad thing as it causes kill off with Centipede.  I just throw Ironite down once a year.

Leave it to an electric power tool company to be an assembly of the geeks. With this crowd surely we could start work on the mobile app d.cline was looking for in another topic? ;]

I'm not quite the active participant in here, but I'll share a little in the spirit of the topic.

For starters, I'm having my second anniversary of my 15th birthday this year. I've always been in software, but currently a technical consultant for a large CMS company out of new hampshire. To spare you the CV, I will leave the details to those that want to Google me. (Unlike you two, I appear on at least a few thousand tape backups and actively floating around several web farms).

I enjoy all things technology related (just ask my fiancé, she bought me a shirt gloating "my vices are my devices"). Speaking of, my better half has put up with me and my [de]vices 5 long years. To avoid any second guessing about pulling the rip cord, we were engaged, bought a house and adopted an adorable bull terrier all last year. We're planning on a low key wedding this year and focus more of the budget on the honeymoon.

When not plugged in, we're usually hiking, biking, bowling, billiards, frisbee with the dog, or outside somehow. Occasionally, to keep the relationship fresh, she's talking me into doing something new--inevitably involving a waiver of some kind (I think she's misinterpreted "until death do us part").

That about sums things up. I'll keep it brief but concise.

Good stuff Brad.  I look forward to reading more of your experiences and advice!  I loved the "2nd 15th" birthday.  Creative.  Hope you have a great summer.

I've enjoyed your posts over the past while and it's been a pleasure having you around.
