I'm wondering if certain ebay sellers are lying to me about whether I
would receive a manufacturer's warranty if I bought from them, and maybe
some of you can shed some light on this.

There were several
sellers selling stuff on ebay up until recently that were going for very
fair prices, and these sellers would being completely honest and saying
these were used or "like new" but open box.

Now I've seen a
string of sellers recently selling "new" stuff on ebay, and I've asked
each of them whether I would receive a warranty. One guy honestly told
me "it's an unopened box, but you may not get a warranty, and that risk
is worth it to some people to get it at a discount." Ok, fair enough.
However, several other sellers told me "you WILL get a warranty because
this is NEW." I noticed their auctions are getting WAY more bids and
going for FAR higher prices than the "like new" sellers. Many of them
are going for just $10 less than home depot's prices.

I am
guessing you do NOT get a warranty. Maybe people assume they will, and
that's why they're buying it, or maybe there are other reasons (not near
a home depot, etc.)

I definitely want a warranty unless I can
get it at a substantial discount. On the other hand, I hate walking into
Home Depot and giving them any sum or money. (Yes, I know the product
probably came from their store anyway.) Any ideas?

Not, thanks for your question.  Unfortunately, no, you would not qualify for our 5 year (3 year on batteries and chargers) warranty if you purchased from an auction site, such as Ebay,  Our warranty policy can be found here for future reference:

Only items purchased from our authorized retailers qualify for the manufacturer's warranty.  At this time, our authorized retailer is the Home Depot.
