I just bought the 21" push mower and am having second thoughts. The mower is leaving strips of uncut grass and also dumps clippings on sidewalk instead of being sucked into the bag (this is on the #3 height setting)... and yes, I made sure to pull out the mulching plug. Which leads me to my other question: does this thing mulch well? It seemed to leave clumps as well as uncut blades. I called customer service and they told me that the blade that comes on the mower is not a mulching blade. She mentioned something about the high lift blade that would help pull the grass up, but when I researched the high lift blade, it says this in the description: "Not recommended for use with the mulching plug." I am also concerned with the number of reviews that state the blade needs to be sharpened often. Customer service suggested exchanging the mower since there may be an issue with mine, but I'm also considering moving on and getting the Echo 58v mower. It seems to get good mulching reviews and comes with a brushless motor instead of the brushed on the ego. Has anyone else had similar issues with their mower? Your feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Re stripes of uncut grass - need to overlap so that you cut the tire path from your previous pass.

The blade with the mower is considered a 3 in 1 blade / multipurpose and intended for use with the mulching plug as well as bagging or the chute.  The high lift blade is intended to improve lift for bagging.  Some have found it also improves mulching, although this is not its design purpose.

Mulching results vary by user, lawn type and expectations.  In general I would say the mulching is rated as ok with some finding it great and others bad.  So, using it on your own lawn is the best way to decide withing the HD 90 return period.

I have the 21 SP mower and like it.  It mulches pretty well.  It does leave a line of clippings at times.  Overlapping takes care of some of it.  A foot rake as I make my next path takes care of the rest.
This happens in thicker/longer areas of grass.  Other areas the mower leaves no clippings behind.

I have a HL blade on order to see how it works for me.  Overall I am satisfied with the pluses(no gas, mess, fumes, tune ups, very quite, easy, convenient, all with a good quality cut)  and few minuses (some clipping left behind, not great lift) the mower delivers for me.
