I've been told that discharging fully will allow the batteries last longer - is this true

No, dicharging before recharging is an old guideline for the old generation Nickel-Cadmium bateries because of their “ memory” issues, however with EGO’s new Lithium-ion tech batteries they have no such memory issues, so don’t need this extra discharge first step, which just tends to use more of its life cycle. So you don’t need to discharge Ego’s Great Lithium-ion batteries before charging.
