Is the string supposed to be self-feeding? (Why wouldn't it be?) Mine does not unwind automatically and I am struggling to do it manually.

I believe that is a bump feed. The bottom of the timer center piece is depressed when you have the timer running and “bump” it on the driveway or sidewalk. That feeds out a small piece Keep doing it till it hit the cutter on the edge of the guard.
