i swear i am wrapping the line in the correct direction as shown in numerous videos and the manual.  the line is properly inserted into the eyelets per the directions.  also, the trimmer runs great after reassembly.  however, the minute the string encounters a resistance, it advances to the point of tangling.  I trim back the line and it happens again, and again, and again until there is no line left in the spool.  i have done this twice and same result each time.  I am using .095 line and everything looks good.  help!

How are you winding the string?  Are you winding it on by hand?  If you feed it through the two eyes and then turn the top cover CCW to wind it on the spool it should work fine.

What you described is for the rapid line replacement, I believe. Unfortunately, I do not have this feature. w/o is shorthand for without. I have to manually wind my spool by hand.

I colored in the engravings on my stock unit with a Sharpie marker to make it easy to see.

Tried winding again today. Same result. Decided to wind the opposite direction and viola, no more auto advance of the line and the trimmer works fine. Of course I have to manually advance the line when necessary. Conclusion, something is wrong with the tap and go feature on my unit because it advances without any tapping.

I have no idea how to fix this issue.

Can you post a picture of how you have the spool wound?  It sounds like you are saying it is opposite of the picture I posted above?
