Un boxing possibly used unit? I purchased a brand new 14" chainsaw 2 days ago (gen 2) when I opened it the chain saw was completely assembled, and there was what felt to be oil or lubricants in the oil reservoir. On almost all YouTube videos everyone says they needed to put the chainsaw together out of the box. They also say you must add your own oil. Everything about the chainsaw looks brand new. Charger, battery, even the chainsaw. I guess my biggest concern is the clear lubricant/oil residue I feel when I run my finger inside of the oil reservoir. Is this somthing ego does in the manufacturing of this product, or did I buy a used and returned unit ?

I recently bought the 16" and it was fully assembled. Didn't check the oil reservoir for previous oil.

It's difficult to clean all the wood residue off of a chainsaw - if it's clean it's probably new. Also, be sure to check the chain tension. On mine, probably for shipping, it was way to tight out of the box.

Thanks for the speedy response. I honestly didn't know there was such thing as a chain being to tight. I just checked after reading your reply . The chain on mine is as tight as it gets as there is absolutely zero slack between the chain and the bar. I guess this gives me a little more peace of mind that it is a new saw .

Same here, my saw was fully assembled out of the box. I didn't check the reservoir for traces of lubricant.

  • Agree with Michael G, the chain was too tight as shipped.  The chain has a clear & light machine oil, which is similar to what you get with a new chain for any saw.  I did not notice any oil in my oil reservoir.

I went to a few home depots and viewed the floor model. They all had the same oil when I felt around the mouth of the reservoir. On a side note I will say it's pretty scary that Home Depot has a fully functional chainsaw on display. Fully charged battary, nice sharp chain....lawsuit waiting to happen.
