can't push tabs back in on string trimmer head

I was reloading the string on the string trimmer and went to put the head back together and now for some reason the tabs won't go in far enough to lock into place. I've done this several times and never had this problem. Examining the head, it looks like the ring with the tabs on it moves freely both rotating, and also up and down, which means the tabs are out of reach of the slots when I push the head together. I can't recall if the up and down is new, perhaps something broke allowing that movement that pushes the tabs out of reach of the slots? I hope this description makes sense.

Is this the newer rapid reload head?  If so, I've noticed it is sometimes finicky to snap back together.  One thing to check is to make sure there isn't any dirt and debris inside.  Once a month, I take trimmer head apart and completely clean it up.  The rapid reload head doesn't get fouled/dirty as quickly as the older bump head.

Yes it is the newer head.  I managed to get it back together by pushing alternately on both sides, sort of rocking it back and forth as I pushed in, which seemed to shimmy the tabs down further.

I've noticed the Rapid Reload head takes a little bit of a wiggle to get it to seat properly. After going through it a few times I've got the hang of it, but it does take some practice.
