Doc, do you think it is just a defect with this particular battery?

Either the battery or the charger, it's not normal that's for sure. You can also contact Ego and see if they can send you a replacement:

i got great help from EGO once i called their CS line instead of posting here.  they were incredibly helpful, they talked me through the troubleshooting steps and we solved the problem in a matter of minutes.  and they were ready to send out a replacement part if what we tried didn't work.

I wish all customer service worked like that.  I went "mad" last night trying to get a human on Apple customer service.

TK, that is exactly why I have no second thoughts about the EGO brand.  They ALWAYS take care of any legitimate problem, and you talk to people who don't treat you like an unknowledgeable person.

Thanks everyone, I did talk to someone at Ego and they were very nice. I found out what the problem was and it is okay now... Hate to admit it, but it was my error.

I am curious - Did you fail to shove it in firmly enough to get charged?

Sharon, no it wasn't that, and I am too embarrassed to say what it was.

You didn't have it plugged in?  At any rate, I am glad you got it fixed.

I must say though, I just mowed my front yard, and this is a hard job for me on a small front yard because of my back, But I made it, and it did a fantastic job, wasn't to heavy for me, started right up and now I am in love with this machine. People were driving by and staring at it and I guess me, I think they wanted to see why it wasn't very noisy and how well it was doing on yard.

Bev.   I find it much easier to use also.   I love the sound it makes; it really bothers my ears with the gas powered ones and, in general who wants to hear loud motor noise when in the great outdoors.

Try to make sure the battery's firmly in the charger , with mine I had to stand it on its side and push the battery down hard until it locked in, both lights should be on in the beginning

my neighbor saw me using my string trimmer, next thing i knew HE had one too...
we BOTH like not smelling gas fumes as well as how quiet the tools are by comparison.
