Bad battery, green light then blinking yellow light

Wanted to share my problem/resolution in case anyone experiences something similar.

I bought the 21" self propelled mower with battery/charger a couple of weeks ago from Home Depot.  It ran wonderfully for my small front yard and most of the back yard.  Then it seemed the battery had depleted, so I brought it in to charge it and went about doing other yard work.

After it had fully recharged, I brought it back out, and the mower only started at most for a couple seconds before dying and the battery started blinking yellow.  There doesn't seem to be complete information on what all of the different colors/flashes mean on the battery and mower, but I gathered that the battery and/or the mower was overheated or the battery was not adequately charged.  I decided to bring the battery inside and put the mower away and the next day tried again with completely cooled mower and battery, but ended up with the same results.

Today, a couple weeks later, I plugged the charger back in and the battery showed 100% with no lights flashing to indicate an overheating problem.  When I tried to use the mower again, this time it didn't even try to start.  The light on the battery goes green for a second or two and then flashes yellow again.  Same lights flash when I push the button on the battery.

I called customer support, waited for a call back, and after explaining the situation and light sequence on the battery, the customer service agent said they would ship me a new battery in 5-10 business days.  The battery/charger/mower kit all show an Oct. 2016 date.  Not sure if it was a bad batch or if it was a fluke in mine.  Hopefully the replacement doesn't have the same issue or something else doesn't go wrong.  As it stands I'll have to wait at least another week to try mowing again...

I am having the same problem. I get the blinking yellow using both the large battery that came with the mover as well as the smaller one that works fine with the trimmer. The large batter also works fine with trimmer.

Brian, how old is your mower? If it's within Home Depot's 90 day return policy (assuming you bought it there) take it back for an exchange.
Definitely sounds like a mower problem since both batteries work in your trimmer.
An easy check is to check the area in the mower where the battery attaches. Make sure there is no debris down in there around the terminals that might prevent a good contact between battery and mower.
If you are outside of the 90 day return period, give customer service a call. Call early in the day to avoid hold times.
They can be reached at 1-855-EGO-5656 (1-855-346-5656) from 8:30AM - 8:00PM EST (Monday - Friday) & 10:00AM - 6:00PM EST (Saturday & Sunday).

I am having the same problem- also bought in oct 2016.  I am waiting for the new battery. I asked how to maintain the battery. Basically take off the battery after full charged, hopefully this won't happen again.

If your batteries work in other equipment, it's not the batteries, I don't think. My contacts were pretty clean but I cleaned them all up on the mower and battery but that didn't seem to make a difference. I used my mower today and I believe that the micro-switch in the handle, that senses whether or not it's fully extended and locked in place, might be the culprit. I believe it's on the right side of the handle where the green clip snaps in.

I fiddled with mine today buy depressing the green start button, then holding down the run lever. After I got half a second of green light and then about 20 flashing yellows and no start, I unclipped BOTH handle clips, quickly pressed in the handle about an inch and pulled it back out. It started right up, I clipped it back in and ran.

Hope that helps. Please post if you notice anything else.

Brian

Depending on your mower model Ego has replacement clips available that should solve your problem.  Give customer service a call.

I called Customer Service and was told to take it to Home Depot where they will do the repair and return in 4-6 weeks. Ugh!!

Update 5 days later:

The replacement battery is logged as an Aug 1 order in my user account, but the status is still "Waiting" with no tracking number.  Not sure if the original info of 5-10 days meant for it to finally ship or get to me.

Future ideas for customer service: Provide a voucher or reimbursement for buying a replacement at Home Depot, or order it from Home Depot for the customer to pick up in store.  Either way would prevent a long processing/shipping time for a seemingly simple fix.

Update 12 days later:

Replacement battery finally shipped Aug 7.  Estimated to arrive Monday Aug 13, 15 days after contacting customer service.  As a temporary fix, I've ordered a battery from Home Depot and got in one day.  I'll be returning the extra battery after I've used it to cut my lawn and considering returning the mower as well.  Really disappointing service.

Also submitted a review about my experience with the mower seems to have been removed from the website.  It was approved Aug 6, though the link from the approval email doesn't go to the review but rather redirects to the general product page.  Can't find it if I sort by recently posted either.  No wonder they have so few poor reviews...
