20" mower, handle locking clamp, V2 UPGRADE, REVIEW

I reviewed 500 posts and couldn't find a similar thread which provides details of the upgraded clamp for the 20" mower.  There appears to have been an earlier version 1 (involving a notch), posted about a year ago here:

https://community.egopowerplus.com/ego/topics/lawnmower-handle-locks-pop-out-constantly-is-there-a-f...

The replacement clamps I received today were very different, so I'm calling them version 2.  Here is a list of the differences I noticed:

1) The clamp body on the new one has a pronounced shelf
2) The clamp has a corresponding claw, where as the original made contact at a single point
3) Internally, the new one has a larger box area where the safety mechanism spring goes (do not have a picture)
4) The rubber locks appear to be the same

As I stated in another post, I bought this mower used, so I had to pay $20 for the replacements.  And it is completely worth the $20! The clamp snaps in place with a significant CLICK, and there is no way it will unlatch inadvertently.  The contact area between the old and new is 5-7 times larger.

Hopefully this guide will allow people who might buy one used to determine if they have the old or new style.  If you are an original owner of a 20" mower, and have not requested the replacements, you do not know what you're missing!!

Looks like your clip is missing the pin that protrudes into the handle bar?

@(a)Typical Engineer: I now see from your other posts why you cut the pin/posts off the clips to allow the clips to lock in any position.

Jacob, yes, and the air bag deployed... that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Exrace, Shhhhhsh! (I don't want to be banned from the forum for encouraging product modificaitons; though we're all grown adults here).

ATE, awesome coverage of the upgrade!!!

My handle clips we're doing ok at the start of the season, but now the left clamp pops out every 2-3 minutes and the right every 5-10 mins or so. Extremely annoying! The upgrade is something I had planned to do over the winter.

Great to see the new version of the upgrade not only includes new clips, but a whole new design for the entire mechanism. When I first saw the new 21" mowers on display at HD the biggest "wow" factor for me was the nice positive snap of the handle clips!

My 20" mower is now through its full second season of mowing and the handle clips are the only part that has bothered me. Time to make the call I think!

I just put hose clamps over mine, problem solved.. industrial ZIp ties would work also just clip them when you want to slide the handle in.

Jennifer VandeWater, when did these upgraded handle clamps become available?  It appears to have been sometime between now and a year ago.

I know they were available shortly after I bought my mower two years ago.

I just ordered replacements for mine today.

Bump for a PSA; if you have the 20" mower, you should take a look and see if you have the OLD or NEW clamps; and if you still have the OLD ones, you are highly encouraged to call Ego and get the FREE upgrade.  And if you bought your 20" second hand, then you are highly encouraged to pay the $20 and buy the upgrade.

Note: Yes, Ego should warranty a defective design, even for secondary owners, but I've moved on with my life!

Just to clarify, this clamp upgrade is only applicable to the Gen 1 20" mower; the Gen 2 21" and the Gen 3 20" (brushless), should have the latest design.

Instructions with great pictures, and the only tool needed is a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

My 21 inch SP mower is in the garage so don't know tonight what clamp version but my right one slips all the time. For time being, I placed a very large binder clip above it to keep it from sliding, and this worked great until I can order some new clamps. At least I can mow in the meantime.

Karen, this version 2 of the clamp only applies to the really old 20" mowers.  All the mowers shipping after these became available should have the latest.  And I would think that none of the 21" mowers have the OLD clamp problem.  Also the Gen 3 20" mowers should not have this problem.

If you 21" is having clamp problems, give Ego CS a call as there is an issue with your mower that needs to be fixed.
