My trimmer has impressive power after I adjust the line. About a minute later, the line shrinks to about 3 inches and won't advance and the trimmer diminishes to inadequate power. Are there techniques to winding the line, that alleviate this problem, which has been endemic to string trimmers since the dawn of time? I don't want to have to dismantle trim head 5 times during a session. In looking at bump head, it doesnt seem to have any play, nor capablility of advancing line.

John, one thing I have found with the 15 inch trimmer is the line will only advance if you have it going close to full speed. Could that have something to do with your issue?
Also, I'm not sure I fully understand your issue with the line becoming shorter. Are you wearing the line out in an unreasonably fast time, or is the line somehow being pulled back into the head?
I find the line included with the 15 inch trimmer is not the most durable line in the world, but it is .095" line and does take quite a bit of cutting use to wear it down. Unless maybe you are trimming all the time against a very abrasive surface like concrete or parging?

I had nothing but trouble with the twisted line Ego included with the trimmer. I replaced it with another brand of line (Rhino, I think, but don't hold me to that) and it works much better.

I use Desert Extrusion Vortex .095 line and have had no issues. I changed the line it came with as soon as I got it . And yes try to bump at full speed.

When the line is jammed, i remove the spool and have to extricate the line, which is stuck under another layer. When I do that, I pull about 5 inches through the holes, and it cuts like crazy, until a minute later when a couple of inches have worn off. Even if it's crappy line, it should still advance, right? Of course I am running at full speed. I purchased about 4 months ago. Might I have gotten one of the units that people were having issues with? Is that issue the one I am describing? Thanks

Generally speaking, the issues people were seeing was with the 12" trimmer. The 15" seems to work well for most people.
The Ego line wears quicker than the replacement line I'm using, some hexagonal shaped line, I don't remember the name. The new stuff is more durable, but it's also much louder.
I haven't had an issue with the bump feed with either line. Is it possible your winding technique is contributing?
Ken, was it the 15"'trimmer you had issues with?

It is entirely possible my winding technique is sub-par. I would be appreciative of any tips in that vein.

John, we made a YouTube video to show you how to wind new line on the spool. Take a look and see if that helps. https://youtu.be/w4WRM4AM3ts?list=PL82ntYmWALMK21UE7FyjqzolW_ncJD9pI Our first guess is that it's wound improperly.

I watched the recommended YouTube video on winding the string and it's COMPLETELY different from what the manual says to do. Have you changed procedures?

Hi Sue, what model of trimmer do you have? The linked video in this 3 year old thread is exactly what the 15" string trimmer's manual says to do. No difference.

The video above is from before Ego released the rapid reload head. The video for loading the rapid reload head is here: https://youtu.be/Ye8t8MBZg2Q

Sue, I will add in my own experience, the only tricky thing for me with the rapid reload head is hitting the hole farther inside the outer eyelet. You can see it with good light. Once the line is through there the rest is a breeze!
